Robert Crumb, the genius comic book artist, is having an unprecedented retrospective of his drawings and comics. Crumb, From the Underground to Genesis, spans almost five decades of his work with 700 original drawings, and 200 underground magazines, with many from his private collection. It includes many of his most famous characters including Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural, Devil Girl, Flakey Foont and Angelfood McSpade.

Eugene Atget

April 2012 Eye Need to Do's: Helmut Newton, Tim Burton, Nixon in China, and Pina Bausch

Helmut Newton 1920-2004
Master photographer Helmut Newton went far beyond the norms of fashion photography and created a provocative identity for his photos. His nudes, portraits, and fashion photos from French Elle and Paris Vogue, are celebrated in a retrospective of over 200 photos. Newton lived in the Marais in the early 60s, defining his iconic style that would later lead him to live in Los Angeles and Monte Carlo. The show was organized by his longtime wife June, who is also a respected and well-known photographer. This is the must-see show of the spring.

A major hit in New York and Los Angeles, Tim Burton spins his movie magic again in Paris with a show of his prodigious output in the last three decades. Hundreds of drawings, costumes, designs, stills, and artifacts show the creative genius of one of our most beloved filmmakers. Fra Angelico and the Masters of Light
This very special exhibition presents 30 works of Fra Angelico, the Florentine Rennaissance painter from the 15th century. Twenty other works by painters highly influenced by Fra Angelico such as Lorenzo Monaco, his teacher, Masolino,and Paolo Uccello. Works including the Last Judgement triptych (from the Corsini Gallery in Rome), La Madone di Cedri (San Matteo National Museum, Pisa) and one of the panels from L'armadio degli argenti, (San Marco Museum, Florence) are being shown. There is also a video showing his most brilliant work, the frescoes of the San Marco Monastery in Florence.

Yakoi Kusama, the Japanese avant-garde artist known for her obsessional work with painting polka dots, is having her first French retrospective. One hundred and fifty works from 1949 to 2001 including her paintings, environments, sculptures, and films show the full arc of hew work which is strongly rooted in childhood memories. The Stein Family Collection – Matisse, Cezanne, Picasso
The Stein family, including Gertrude and her two elder brothers Leo and Michael, were Jewish intellectuals from the United States who relocated to Paris in the early 1900s. Befriending many artists and writers of the time, they were some of the first collectors of paintings from then unknown artists Matisse, Picasso, Renoir, Cezanne, Gris, and Bonnard. They went on to  build one of the most important collections of early 20th century art and this new exhibit, divided into eight sections explores the Stein’s relationship with the artists over the years.

Diane Arbus
Iconic American photographer Diane Arbus is having her first major retrospective in Paris. Known for her gritty black and white photos in the 1950s and 60s, Arbus used New York City, her home, as the backdrop for her fascinating, sometimes harsh photos. Over 200 of her unflinching photos are on exhibit  including couples, children, and celebrities and also her more controversial images of carnival performers, nudists transvestites, zealots, and eccentrics.

I am happy to announce the launch of Eye Prefer Paris Cooking Classes. Come take an ethnic culinary journey with me and chef and caterer Charlotte Puckette, co-author of the bestseller The Ethnic Paris Cookbook (with Olivia Kiang-Snaije). First we will shop at a Paris green-market for the freshest ingredients and then return to Charlotteís professional kitchen near the Eiffel Tower to cook a three-course lunch. After, we will indulge in the delicious feast we prepared along with hand-selected wines.

Cost: 185 euros per person (about $240)
Time: 9:30AM- 2PM (approximately 4 1/2 hours)
Location: We will meet by a metro station close to the market
