European Film Awards 20th Anniversary

Efa1

I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the European Film Awards in Berlin last Saturday night. My friend Eugene Hernandez, who is the editor/owner of www.indiewire.com,the online bible of independent film, asked me last month if I wanted to cover them, since he couldn’t attend, and I gladly said YES!  to my first red carpet writing assignment.

I flew to Berlin on Friday, and that night there was a special concert, The Music of the Image, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the awards. The concert was at the stately Admiralpalast Theater, which is an Art Deco theater built in the 1930’s, and was later ordered to be redesigned to look more German by Goebbels.  The Flemish Radio Orchestra played sumptuous movie music from films "Jean de Florette," "2046," "Casino Royale," and "Life is Beautiful”, amongst others. The thrilling, sexy James Bond theme played live was the highlight of the concert.

The awards were on Saturday night and since it was a black tie affair, I donned my pinstriped suit, with a black & white print Agnes B. shirt, black leather tie and silver Puma sneakers.

Held at a massive warehouse/hangar like space in the middle of nowhere, the atmosphere of the awards was more Golden Globe’s, than Oscar's, with banquet tables flowing with Champagne. Trying to look cool, but still awestruck by movie stars coming down a red carpet (even though I didn’t know who most of them were), I got caught up in the frenzy of the paparazzi furiously clicking their cameras and tried to get some shots with my paltry Sony digital.

It’s interesting how the red carpet was different than in the U.S. It seemed that a stylist did not dress the women and some wore short dresses instead of gowns. Mega Hollywood stylists would have been horrified that that many of the star’s shoes and bags didn’t match their dresses and Joan Rivers would have had a field day dissing all the “creative” outfits.

I won’t say too much more because it’s in the article, so click here to read.

One last thing: I had the thrill of meeting the luminous Jeanne Moreau, who was kind and gracious. As I stumbled on my words, trying not to be star struck, truth be told, I was.

Wow, I'm so impressed (and jealous!) this is terrific. You made the best dressed list yourself! That must have been so much fun to hop on a jet for Germany for a gig like that one. It's much more fun to see how celebs dress when there are no set "rules". I like watching the Cannes Film Festival for those same things. Thanks for sharing this, tres cool!
