In 2014 I wrote about Theatre in Paris, a new organization that presents plays in French with English subtitles. At that time they only presented a handful of classic plays. I didn’t get the opportunity to see any of the shows and put in on the back burner.
A few weeks ago I received notice of their expanded repertoire of new plays and musicals and became intrigued to attend one.
I contacted the publicity department and they kindly gave me complimentary tickets to Anything You Want for a Sunday matinee.
Anything You Want is a two-character comedy starring Oscar nominated actress Berenice Bejo. The plot revolves around a successful playwright whose past plays were based on personal miseries from her own life. Now happily married with a child and a successful career, she has writers block because she doesn’t have any misery in her new life to write about. To overcome her writing block she enlists a neighbor in a hare-brained scheme to help her and what ensues is funny and surprising.
Before the show we were briefed in English in the bar and lounge area of the Edward VII Theater about the show, the stars, the history of the theater and the way the subtitles worked, all useful information to help us enjoy the show.
The play was well acted, fast paced and crisply directed. The sharp writing was funny and acerbic. Berenice Bejo is even more beautiful in person than the movies.
The subtitles were subtly placed on the top of the stage’s proscenium but they were sometimes hard to read because the lighting was a little too dim. Otherwise it was a satisfying experience and a lovely afternoon at the theater.
Other productions of Theatre in Paris this season are a musical adaptation of Oliver Twist, a musical I Love Piaf, The Cid and Cyrano de Begerac.
