What can be more festive than The Sound of Music at Christmas? The Theatre du Chatelet is presenting a glorious 50th anniversary production. I love the hokey Pierre et Gilles poster. I have never seen a stage production of one of my favorite movies ever and I still cry every time I see it.

Over 50 giant ice sculptures of all the Paris monuments including the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and even Rodin's Thinker are on display in a 5,000 sq. feet tent on the Place de la Concorde. Bundle up, it's cold- -6 Celsius /21 degrees Farenheit.

Petit Palais Murals

While strolling through the circular covered courtyard of the Petit Palais I looked up and discovered these heavenly murals inlaid in the arched ceilings. It's actually called a tympanum and the murals by sculptor Jean Antoine Injalbert depict the muses of the city of Paris.

The Petit Palais is across the street from the Grand Palais and was built for the Universal Exhibition of 1900 by architect Charles Girault. It has been now named the City of Paris Museum of Fine Arts.Most of the collection is the legacy of Auguste Dutui and includes Poussin's The Massacre of the Innocents, Ruben's Prosperpina, and Rembrandt's Self-Portrait with Poodle. There are also Impressionist selections from the nineteenth century by Pisarro, Morisot, Cassatt, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin.

Happy Thanksgiving 2009

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays and for the last two years I have published this French Thanksgiving vocabulary list, courtesy of my former New York French teacher, Luc Georges.

I usually make Thanksgiving dinner but this year I am invited to a friend's and will make an all-American dessert Apple Brown Betty.

Lunch with Lynn/Under 20 Eats: Baan Lek

It was my turn to choose this month so I decided on Baan-Lek, a small, Thai restaurant in the Marais near my apartment. The card says Cuisine de Siam, so one would think the food is authentic. Yes, it is and having eaten there a few times now, it has become one of my favorite Thai restaurants in Paris.

We went on a Friday afternoon at about 12 and pretty much had the place to ourselves. The interior with two side by side dining rooms is modern but warm and the wall behind us was made to look like a abstract painting. The formule is 13.50 euros for three courses and the choices were limited to two dishes for the entrees and plats , and one for dessert. I chose the clear vermicelli noodles with chicken, yam woon sen kai, and Lynn chose the spicy seafood soup,poh taek. Mine was fresh and fragrant and the slivered chicken bits were moist and tender. Lynn's soup had a nice tang of lemongrass along with good, solid vegetables including baby corn and big mushrooms and and a few large plump shrimp. Lynn wasn't too crazy about her salmon curry with fresh basil and coconut milk, chuchee pla,  and she found the sauce too rich and creamy. I liked the curried pork, moo phat prik,which was simpler with earthy flavors. I liked the fact that the dishes came with rice which usually costs extra at Thai restaurants. Grapefruit and mango sorbet were most refreshing and welcome after our spicy dishes and served in a lovely jade colored bowl on a stand, which I was tempted to swipe. Service was pleasant and low-keyed.

I liked my meal better than Lynn, and would for sure return to Baan-Lek for its good value lunch.The prices a la carte run about 30 euros per person for two courses including wine.

Restaurant Review: La Taverna

There are many excellent Italian restaurants in Paris but they are not always easy to find. Most of them have come from recommendations and my newest find La Taverna was one of them. The 7th arr. is a ways from me but I was feeling adventurous and said what the hell, it's worth it if the restaurant is good.

On a quiet street a stones throw from the Eiffel Tower, the outside looked like a postcard cliche of an Italian restaurant but in this case it was very appealing. Once inside, La Taverna had a warm, inviting ambiance with hues of soft orange lighting. In fact the color was so warm that my food photos have a strong orange hue to them. One rare element for a Paris restaurant was that it was spacious and the tables were set far apart from one another. Too many restaurants are cramped with tables that are too small and after I am finished I feel as though I need a chiropractic adjustment.

The menu selection was just right  with enough variety in each menu category. A tart of Taleggio cheese and roquette in a phyllo crust was rich but light with the bitterness of the sweetly dressed roquette balancing the sharp aftertaste of the Taleggio.  My dining companion had the eggplant, smoked cheese,pesto,sun-dried tomato millefeuille which I of course tasted, and the thinly sliced vegetables were delicate and lightly sauteed. 

I always have an ordering dilemma in Italian restaurants as to whether I should get pasta or meat/fish for my main course and the tempting selections made it worse. I finally opted for the tagliatelle with duck ragout and once I tasted it, I had no doubt I ordered the right dish. It was smoky and intense with the duck so tender it felt like velvet on my palate. The true test of any exceptional pasta dish is that the pasta itself is flavorful enough on its own and the tagliatelle easily passed the test.

For dessert, I stuck with a classic, tiramisu, because I was confident from the two courses before that it would be good. Fluffy and light as air with a bite of bittersweet cocoa,it was a dreamy end to a near perfect meal.

The service was friendly and attentive but most important of all it was efficient.Another common complaint is that many a good Paris restaurant meals have been marred by lack of service or being understaffed to the point where you wonder if your waiter will ever surface.

So if you are craving authentic, beautifully prepared Italian cuisine in a comfortable dining room, treat yourself to La Taverna.

Tapisseries de la Bucherie

After finishing another delicious bargain lunch at Le Reminet, I strolled up the street and discovered the most charming tapestry and needlepoint shop La Tapisseries de la Bucherie. The windows were brimming vibrant colored yarns and hand-painted needlepoint canvasses and what attracted me most about the interior was the hand-painted,spiral staircase. I know very little about this special craft that so many people are passionate about but I was fascinated with the beautiful tapestries, the wooden case with dozens of thimbles,the wrought iron rood divider with various silk tassels hanging from it, and the intricately illustrated pillows with scenes of yesteryear. I spoke at length with the friendly owner Dominique Siegler-Lathrop about the extensive services the shop offers besides selling a full range materials for needlepoint and tapestry making. They include needlepoint finishing, classes & workshops, private lessons by appointment, making cushions & pillows and special orders. She said her most popular pattern was the unicorn. The shop carries over 400 colors of hand-dyed  Aubusson wool, which is used for the famous Aubusson tapestries dating back from the 1500s. Needlepoint and tapestry enthusiasts will have to make a special visit to La Tapisseries de la Bucherie.

Margo Bayer is from Los Angeles and had a quick stopover in Paris in mid-October after visiting Israel. She had a wonderful curiosity about Paris and was fascinated with the Marais. We had the most delightful time exploring the southern side of the Marais between the Seine and rue St. Antoine/rue de Rivoli, the part of the Marais most people never see. Highlights of our tour included the Shoah Holocaust Museum, the Village St. Paul with its hidden courtyards and antique shops, the narrow windy streets with architectural surprises, and the gorgeous former private mansions dating from the 1500 & 1600s.  Her photos capture the true essence of my of my Marais tours.

Quirky Paris Shop Windows 2

Coco Chanel, Alber Elbaz,??

I saw these funny clothes hangers with illustrations of iconic French fashion designers in a shop window near St. Sulpice last week. I can figure out who most of them are but there are a few that I am not sure of. Can you fashion mavens tell me who the missing ones are?

The second series of photos are from am eyeglass boutique on rue de Sevigne in the Marais depicting old Hollywood stars with new sunglasses. The last photo is a satiric political comment on the different governing policies of Obama and Sarkozy.

Door of the Month: 1 rue du Cloitre Saint-Merri

I pass this most unusual door all the time on my way to the Pompidou Center. As much as I like the door, I think the mosaic decorating the top of the building is even more impressive. I have not been able to find any information about this building in my research. It's one of those modern buildings that's hard to peg in terms of when it was built. I'm guessing 60s or 70s but some of the details look like Art-Deco. If anyone has more information about the building, please put it in the comments section.
